Is any system resource in the Windows kernel that can be referenced by a unique name in the global Namespace.
The kernel’s Object Manager keeps a hierarchical tree of objects, where each node can be given a name such that other processes or threads can open it by that name.
Examples
| Object type | Sample name | Typical use case |
|---|---|---|
| File | \\Device\\HarddiskVolume1\file.txt | Accessing a file on disk |
| Event | Global\\MyAppSyncEvent | Signaling between threads/processes |
| Mutex / Semaphore | Global\\MyAppMutex | Mutual exclusion or counting |
| Section (memory‑mapped) | Global\\MySharedMem | Shared memory region |
| Named pipe (Port) | \\.\pipe\myPipe | Inter-process communication |
| Registry key (Key) | \\Registry\\Machine\\Software\\MyApp | Storing configuration data |
| Timer | Global\\MyTimer | Scheduling timed events |
