Throughput is a performance measure that describes the rate (in bits/sec) at which a host is receiving data.
If a file of bits takes seconds to receive then the average throughput is
bits/sec.
When there is no traffic the throughput can be approximated as the minimum transmission rate along the path, i.e. the transmission rate of the bottleneck link.
