The Internets current Address Assignment strategy.

Like with Subnets, the IP Address is divided into two parts and written where , known as the prefix, indicates that the most significant bits identify the network and the remaining identify the Hosts.

An organisation is then assigned a range of addresses with a common prefix. The remaining bits of the address can then be used to identify devices in the organisation.
