Part of a Router that does the following:
- Terminates an incoming Physical Links.
- Data link processing
- Queuing the packets
- Lookup in the Forwarding Table and forward the packets accordingly.
The Forwarding Table is either computed by the input port or updated by the routing processor or receive from a remote Software-defined Networking (SDN) controller.
Packet Loss might occur if the input port exceeds its queuing buffer and must drop a packet.
