The TCP/IP Protocol Stack

Sep 30, 2026

A model of organising the set of Protocols that govern communication over the internet.

It is organised so each layer is responsible for a specific aspect of network communication according to Network Layer Encapsulation. These layers are from upper to lower:

  • The Application Layer
  • The Transport Layer
  • The Network Layer
  • The Link Layer
  • The Physical Layer

This organisation of layers is different that The OSI Model, in the way that some layers in this model is a super set of multiple OSI layers.
